What does it takes to become a foster parent?

Hint...no superhero skills required.

Becoming a foster parent can be an intimidating process. Our team is here to explain the requirements, assist with the paperwork, and help you through every step.

Foster parent eligibility requirements

Application & qualifications

During the initial application and qualification process, we'll gather information about you, your family, your home life, and learn about your interest in foster parenting.

Free training classes

The free training classes can be done in-person, virtually, or a combination of the two. You'll meet twice weekly for six weeks, each class lasting two to three hours. The timing can be flexible to fit your schedule. The curriculum is by Pressley Ridge and conducted by a certified Embrace TFC team member.

Paperwork

Our team can explain and help you fill out the paperwork required by the Commonwealth of Virginia. This includes a background check and DMV driving record.

Foster parent requirements: Must be 18 years old

You must be at least 18 years of age.

Foster parent requirements: Have sufficient space in home

You must have sufficient space in your home for a child/children. ​

Foster parent requirements: Criminal background check

You must successfully complete a criminal background check. 

Foster parent requirements: Financial stability

You must be able to demonstrate financial stability, as evidenced by the ability to cover your personal monthly expenses.

Home visit

Embrace TFC team members will visit your home to complete a home study. In addition to seeing your home, this is our chance to get to know each other, answer your questions and concerns, and explore how we can make your foster parenting journey a success.

Safety training

Foster parents must undergo CPR and First Aid training. We also provide you the skills on how to manage difficult situations and behaviors.

Certification

Congratulations! You've completed the process. Now comes the rewarding experience of being a foster parent.
